Bagged Vacuums
A bag is the right answer whenever dust leaving the machine matters more than the cost of replacing it. Emptying a bagless cup releases a cloud of exactly the fine dust you have just collected, whereas a bag is sealed as it is lifted out and goes straight into the bin, which is why bagged cylinders remain the standard recommendation in a house with asthma, hay fever or a dust allergy. Capacity is the second advantage and it is larger than most people expect, often several litres against well under one in a stick vacuum, so emptying becomes something you do every month or two rather than after every use. Look for a sealed system with a HEPA filter rather than HEPA filtration alone, since a filter only helps if the air is actually forced through it instead of escaping around the seams. Beyond that the practical questions are ordinary ones: cord length decides how often you change socket, a variable power dial lets you drop the suction for rugs and curtains so the head stops sticking, and the head itself matters more than the motor, with a turbo or motorised brush needed for carpet and a soft parquet head for timber. Bags are a running cost, so check the type is easy to get before buying.
Miele anchors this range with the Complete C2 and C3 and the Classic C1, including Cat and Dog and Parquet versions built around long service life. Henry, Charles and Harry cover the indestructible end, alongside Hetty, where a machine has to take daily abuse and keep going. Bosch and Morphy Richards supply the mid and value range, Shark adds a lift away upright, and Karcher the AD2 ash vacuum for stoves and fireplaces. The alternative is in Bagless Vacuums.
