An air purifier pulls room air through a filter and pushes it back out cleaner, and almost everything that matters comes down to the filter and the room size. The filter to look for is true HEPA, which captures 99.97 per cent of particles down to 0.3 microns, and that is the grade that actually removes pollen, dust, pet dander and smoke rather than just the visible fluff. Most units pair it with a pre-filter that catches hair and larger dust so the HEPA lasts longer, and an activated carbon layer that deals with smells: cooking, pets, damp, smoke. Room size is quoted either in square metres or as an air changes per hour figure, and the useful one is the second: a purifier that turns the air over four or five times an hour in your room will make a noticeable difference, while one rated for a much larger space than you have simply runs quieter and lasts longer between filter changes. Three things people buy these for in Irish homes. Dust and dust mites, particularly in bedrooms and in older houses with carpet. Pet dander and pet smell, where a model with a dedicated pet filter and a strong carbon stage is worth the difference. And hay fever, where running a purifier in the bedroom with the window shut overnight is the single most effective thing most sufferers try. Filter running cost is the figure people miss: some models want a replacement filter once or twice a year, while washable and long-life filter designs are sold specifically to avoid that, so check before buying rather than after. If damp and condensation are the actual problem rather than particles, a dehumidifier is the right machine instead, and some units combine both.
